App 4 Physios

Davide Bettio

Hey guys! You all have a mobile phone, don’t you?

Well! You’ll find here a few apps that might be of use in your daily work!

Nerve Whiz

Is there a neurological pattern you do not recognize? Can’t you remember which
sensitive areas a nerve refers to? Do you need to have a look at the brachial
plexus?

Created by the Michigan University, Nerve Whiz is a really nice tool to refresh your neurological knowledge!

Clinometer

Clinometer is an easy, free and useful tool to measure several peripheral joint ROM. Its reliability has been frequently recognized in literature. Interestingly, it seems to have a better reliability (K = 0,80) than goniometer (K= 0,69) and observation (K=0,61)

Hudl Technique

I guess all physiotherapists are interested in movement analysis. This is a free app allowing us to record, compare, and store videoclips of people showing relevant movements/activities (e.g. treadmill walk/run – sport specific mvmt – P/E active mvts, etc). Play the video in slow motion, take pictures and draw lines and angles onto it, in a way that you can easily remember what you’ve just seen and, if needed, used for reassessment.

RSS Feed Reader

Just install this app and be constantly up to date with journals/blogs/websites/magazines you are most interested in. Just add them to the list and this app will show you the latest titles/abstracts/posts published. You’ll realize soon the huge amount of papers (scientific and not) that every day are edited!

Physio2Go

Do you want to increase patient compliance with home exercise? You need only 4 simple steps:

  • Add new client and fill out patients details
  • Take photos of your client doing personalized exercises
  • Customize the exercises by adding variables like repetitions, sets, weight and extra notes
  • Check the PDF preview and e-mail it to your client or use AirPrint to print the file on paper.

And now for him/her there are no excuses! =D

P.S. It is only available for IOS systems (apple products) …I personally hope they’ll adapt it for Android devices soon!

And now a couple of apps to lead your patients a bit into a more generic aerobic and athletic fitness (help you improving his compliance and saving you a lot of time and effort on thinking of what/how much/when to do something…)

30DayFit

Simple and well-done app proponing home fitness exercise without the need of special tools. Good points:

  • Different body parts training programs developed in 30 days (days of rest included)
  • Gentle progressions tailored on people starting fitness level.
  • Daily alarm (very useful for the compliance!)
  • Exercise is described and, if needed, shown through a videoclip

Warning: t’s always better to check the program with the patient before to start training.  If necessary adapt and personalize the exercise on patient goals and characteristics.

C25K – 5K running trainer

This app is for everyone approaching for the first time to the world of running. It also contains good tips to improve aerobic qualities. This app recommends progressive trainings in order to lead the patient to run 5Km in around 8 weeks. (3 trainings per week expected)

Good points:

  • “Coach” voice available through the earphones (He knows what you’re doing thanks to your phone GPS system) .
  • Achievements recorded in your profile

Couch to 5K by Rundouble

This App is similar to the previous one, but a bit more complete and structured. It recommends a 9 weeks training program and it allow you to listen to your personal music (spotify, personal playlists, shazam, etc) while training. You can get 2 weeks of training for free and then you can buy every single training program for 1,25 € each or unlock the “Unlimited” version for 2,50€.

If anyone has other tips/apps to recommend just add them to the list!!

Thanks for sharing!
